Installing a solid fuel range?

I'm planning on getting a solid fuel range. I did have an oil stove, no boiler. I've been told that I have to change the lining in my chimmney for it to be suitable for a solid fuel stove. I'm also being told I can just pull the old lining out. What do I need to know about chimney linings in order to install this range safely?
