Life expectancy once starting dialysis?

my brother pulled his hamstring, they made an incision in his leg to drain the fluids. he came down with mersa and now his kidneys are having issues, they are wanting to start dialysis. I heard that once you start dialysis you dont have much time to live. can someone please fill me in on life expectancy.
